Banca Popolare di Sondrio is a cooperative bank that set its roots in Sondrio, Italy in 1871, then observed and played a major role in the development of its community. Taking strength from the cooperative banking movement, Banca Popolare di Sondrio steadily expanded throughout Lombardy and eventually as far as Rome.
In 1991, the fast-growing bank crossed the Italian border and opened a representative branch in Lugano, which soon gave way to Banca Popolare di Sondrio (SUISSE) SA, a fully-fledged Swiss bank wholly owned by its parent in Valtellina.
The move was a wise one, as the Italian/Swiss border raises no obstacle to the flow of thought, culture, creativity and action. Nature has blessed Ticino and Valtellina with the same geography: the mountains, climate and traditions are very similar, as are the human and economic relationships, and the historical ties between the two regions are both ancient and modern.
For the sake of collaboration and community spirit, Banca Popolare di Sondrio embarked on this new challenge in the financial city whose home is first Ticino, and then Switzerland itself.
Banca Popolare di Sondrio (SUISSE) SA, founded in 1995 in Lugano, soon opened many new locations in Switzerland and abroad. Today its network spans 22 locations: in Lugano it has its general management, headquarters, city branch, a sub-office in Lugano-Cassarate and, from this year, the new Paradiso branch; its locations elsewhere are in Chiasso, Mendrisio, Locarno, Bellinzona and Biasca (Canton Ticino); St. Moritz, Poschiavo, Celerina, Pontresina, Castasegna, Chur and Davos (Graubünden); Berne; St. Gallen; Zurich; Basel (two branches); and the Principality of Monaco.
The Swiss institution performs broad and diversified operations, devoting the same care and expertise to every sector. It acts as a universal bank and remains true to the Group's philosophy of making the customer its ultimate point of focus. |
