Banca CR Firenze was established under the name "Societa della Cassa di Risparmio" on 30 March 1829, when a group of eleven civic leaders established a banking serive for the less affluent.

Since then, the Bank has always played an important role in the growth of Florence and Tuscany. During the years which followed the Second World War the Bank participated actively in the reconstruction of the country and dedicated itself to supporting the economy and small- and medium-size businesses which, still today, constitute the backbone of activities in the ares where it operates.

Since the ende of the 1960s, the Bank has contributed to the foundation of companies such as Centro Leasing Banca S.p.A., Centro Factoring S.p.A, Findomestic Banca S.p.A. and Eptaconsors S.p.A., shareholdings which have later risen to national prominence.

In 1992, the Bank became a "Societa per Azioni - S.p.A.", a limited company, under the name Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze S.p.A., and, in 1998, after the aquisition of the controlling stakes of other savings banks located in Central Italy, became a banking group. The Bank assumed the role of parent company.

In 1999, the main shareholder, Ente Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze, sold minority stakes to two new partners - BNP Paribas and Isituto Sanpaolo di Torino - and, from 2000 to April 2008, the Bank's shares were publically traded on the Milan Stock Exchange.

On July 2007, Ente Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze, as well as other foundations shareholders of the Bank, signed an agreement with Intesa Sanpaolo who acquired control over Banca CR Firenze.

Today, Banca CR Firenze is a member of the Intesa Sanpaolo Banking Group. By joining this Group, Banca CR Firenze now benefits from the wide activities implemented by one of the major European Banking Groups.
